Nature transformed through industry is the predominant theme in the work of the Canadian photographer Edward Burtynsky. Through his striking photographs of recycling yards, mine tailings, quarries, refineries, shipbreaking, the industrialization of China, and the path of oil, he documents the massive human incursion into and upon the earth.
His photographs remind us that oil fields, refineries and recycling plants do exist, even though not many of us see them on a daily basis. Even more to the point, they exist on a larger scale than we might have imagined. Almost taking on the qualities of an abstract work, Burtynsky’s survey of these industries is non-judgmental. While he does try to ignite a dialogue between our needs and the capacity of our planet, he doesn’t present his work as a complaint on society.
“These images are meant as metaphors to the dilemma of our modern existence; they search for a dialogue between attraction and repulsion, seduction and fear. We are drawn by desire – a chance at good living, yet we are consciously or unconsciously aware that the world is suffering for our success. Our dependence on nature to provide the materials for our consumption and our concern for the health of our planet sets us into an uneasy contradiction. For me, these images function as reflecting pools of our times.”

His remarkable photographic depictions of global industrial landscapes are included in the collections of over fifty major museums around the world, including the National Gallery of Canada, the Bibliotèque Nationale in Paris, the Museum of Modern Art and the Guggenheim Museum in New York, the Reina Sofia Museum, Madrid, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in California. Mr. Burtynsky’s distinctions include the TED Prize, The Outreach award at the Rencontres d’Arles, The Flying Elephant Fellowship, Applied Arts Magazine book award(s), and the Roloff Beny Book award. In 2006 he was awarded the title of Officer of the Order of Canada and holds four honorary doctorate degrees.

De transformatie van de natuur door de industrie vormt het hoofdthema in het werk van de Canadese fotograaf Edward Burtynsky. Met zijn sprekende foto’s van reclyclingbedrijven, steengroeven, raffinaderijen, scheepssloperijen, de industrializatie van China en de oliewinning, documenteert hij het immense ingrijpen in en op de aarde door de mens. Zijn foto’s herinneren ons eraan dat olievelden, raffinaderijen en recyclingbedrijven een realiteit zijn, hoewel de meesten van ons er niet dagelijks mee geconfronteerd worden. Bovendien is deze realiteit grootschaliger dan we ons waarschijnlijk voorstellen.
Net als bij de kwaliteiten van een abstract werk, is Burtynsky’s onderzoek naar deze industrieën er een zonder dat hij oordeelt. Terwijl hij probeert om tot een dialoog te komen tussen wat wij nodig hebben en de capaciteit van onze planeet, presenteert hij zijn werk niet als een klacht over de maatschappij.
